The Latest From SPUN

On Monday, 29th February, we had one of our biggest talks yet!  90 members attended the presentation on Councils: Behind the Curtain with Eli Gescheit!

As always, thank you to all our members for coming along to the meetings, remembering to book by the Thursday before so we have enough seats, and a special thank you to those of you who stay until the end!  On Monday, our generous Sponsor - Dan Micallef from PGH Bricks - brought along some excellent sketch books to give away, so we had an extra large lucky door prize!  Congratulations to all those winners!

At Monday's meeting, we also had a number of announcements, so in case you missed some of them, here's a summary:

Vale Paul Pholeros:

To kick off the meeting on Monday, John O'Brien-SPUN Chair and MC, gave a brief description of Paul's works and everything he's done for SPUN, and we began the meeting with a minute of silence in remembrance.

Next talk was only 3 weeks away:

Due to the Easter Holiday, our next talk is coming up extra quick, and you're going to want to get in on this one!

Tim Horton is the Registrar of the NSW Architects' Registration Board, so not only will he be talking about the latest changes to the registration system, and as-yet unpublished research regarding growth of the innovation economy - he will also be available to answer all your questions about CPD!

*NEW* SPUN North Shore Emerging Architects Network

Our newest SPUN Committee Member, Miguel Paredes, announced the creation of a new spinoff from SPUN aimed at engaging the younger generation on the North Shore!

This spinoff group will focus on bringing together the younger architects and aspiring architects of the North Shore with some of the next generation to provide a resource for support and encouragement in becoming registered and developing your career.  It will also provide a hub for the younger generation to network with each other in a more social environment.

Check your email for the invitation and be sure to invite all the up and coming young architects in your firm and your neighbourhood!

Sustainability Forum:

Zeny Edwards, SPUN Vice-Chair, announced that the United Nations Association of Australia Peace Program is holding a Sustainability Forum on the 5 of October to mark World Habitat Day. The full-day forum will focus on architecture's connection with the world habitat, particularly on how to further enrich positive inter-action with climate and site, with people and their environment. There will be a chance for architects to join the UNAA Peace Program Director's Circle of architects and innovators who will be invited to showcase their creative ideas exemplifying the best means of achieving sustainability.

Donation to the Archdiocese of Mt Hagen in the Western Highlands Province of PNG

Following a fantastic talk late last year from our Chair John O'Brien, and the team at SAGO Network, SPUN was able at this meeting to present a Donation of $2500 to the Archdiocese of Mt Hagen in Papua New Guinea.

The Archdiocese has identified a need to provide an emergency response to protect children, who for a variety of reasons, find themselves abandoned or on the streets. A former Pastoral Centre at Ulga, outside of Mt Hagen, is being developed as a care centre for such children. The centre is in an ideal location with suitable buildings and spacious grounds, within a village, with a primary school nearby. A religious congregation of nuns has agreed to manage the centre and care for the needs of the children. However, the buildings and services are in poor condition and very much in need of refurbishment to bring them up to an acceptable standard. The funds donated by SPUN will go to help with this project.
